Maui County Furnished Rentals

Extended stays on Maui, Molokaʻi, and Lānaʻi: sunny beach towns, cool Upcountry farm country, and two of Hawaiʻi’s quietest islands.

Why Stay a While in Maui County

Maui County takes in three inhabited islands, each with its own pace. Maui, the “Valley Isle,” pairs world-famous beaches with the cool slopes of Haleakalā . Molokaʻi is rural and deeply rooted in Hawaiian culture. Lānaʻi is small, quiet, and centered on one town.

Longer stays here suit seasonal residents, remote workers, healthcare and education professionals, and the families and workers involved in West Maui’s recovery. A few months gives you time to find your corner of the county, whether that’s a South Maui beach walk or an Upcountry farmers market.

Maui County’s regions are very different in weather, pace, and price. Region guides are coming soon.

Central Maui

Kahului and Wailuku. The airport, hospital, shopping, and county offices.

Upcountry

Makawao, Pukalani, and Kula. Cooler air, ranches, and farms on Haleakalā’s slopes.

North Shore & East Maui

Pāʻia, Haʻikū, and Hāna. Green, rainy, and slow-paced.

A Note on West Maui

West Maui is still rebuilding after the August 2023 Lahaina wildfire, and long-term housing for residents and recovery workers remains the community’s top priority. If you’re an owner, please consider local families and recovery workers when you rent. If you’re planning a stay, be respectful of the ongoing recovery: some areas remain restricted, and Lahaina is a place of mourning as well as rebuilding. The County of Maui posts current updates.

Living in Maui County

Climate

South and West Maui are sunny and dry most of the year. Upcountry towns like Kula sit at elevation, so nights are cool. The North Shore and East Maui around Hāna are green and rainy. Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi are generally dry, with cooler air in Lānaʻi City.

Getting Around

You’ll want a car on all three islands. Maui Bus connects the main towns on Maui, but service is limited. The road to Hāna is slow and winding, so plan extra time for any trip to East Maui.

Airports

Health Care

Maui Health runs Maui Memorial Medical Center in Wailuku, the county’s main hospital, plus Kula Hospital and Lānaʻi Community Hospital. Molokaʻi General Hospital is part of The Queen’s Health Systems . Some specialist care means a flight to Honolulu.

Utilities

Hawaiian Electric serves all three islands, and electricity is expensive, so ask whether it’s included in the rent. Upcountry Maui can face water restrictions during dry spells.

Haleakalā

Sunrise at the summit of Haleakalā National Park is a bucket-list experience, and it requires an advance reservation. Bring warm layers: it’s often near freezing at the top before dawn.

Maui County Rental FAQ

What is the minimum stay for a Maui County rental?

Generally 180 days. In Maui County, rentals shorter than 180 days are treated as transient vacation rentals, which are only allowed in certain zones or with a county permit. The rules are also changing: under Bill 9, short-term rentals in apartment-zoned districts are being phased out, starting in West Maui at the end of 2028 and countywide by the end of 2030, and some properties may be rezoned. If you’re planning a stay under 180 days, ask the owner how the property is permitted. See the County of Maui permit page and recent coverage from Maui Now .

Do I need a car?

Yes, on all three islands. Maui Bus covers the main towns on Maui, but most rentals, beaches, and errands are a drive away.

Are Molokaʻi or Lānaʻi good for a long stay?

They can be, if you want quiet. Both have one main town, limited shopping, and fewer rentals, so plan groceries and travel ahead. Molokaʻi in particular is a close-knit, rural community, and visitors are asked to be respectful of local customs.

Is it okay to stay in West Maui right now?

Yes, many areas of West Maui are open, and extended stays can support the local economy. Be mindful that the recovery is ongoing, respect restricted areas, and consider that housing for residents and recovery workers comes first.
