Upcountry Maui Furnished Rentals

Makawao, Pukalani, and Kula: cooler air, ranches, and farms on the slopes of Haleakalā.

Upcountry is Maui with a sweater on. On the green slopes of Haleakalā, paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) towns, flower farms, and wide views over the isthmus make for a quieter, cooler kind of island life. Mornings are crisp, evenings call for a fireplace, and the whole island stretches out below you.

Living in Upcountry

Upcountry feels like a different island from the beach towns below. Makawao has a historic main street with galleries and a famous bakery, Pukalani has the everyday shopping, and Kula is farm country, with lavender, protea, and vegetable fields at 3,000 feet.

It’s also the gateway to Haleakalā National Park . Kula was affected by the August 2023 fires as well, and recovery continues in parts of the community. Many people choose Upcountry for its cooler weather, larger lots, and a strong sense of community.

Neighborhoods

  • Makawao: a paniolo town with galleries, cafés, and a weekend rodeo tradition.
  • Pukalani: a residential hub with shopping, schools, and a golf course.
  • Kula: farm country with big views, flower farms, and cooler nights.
  • Haliʻimaile and Olinda: quiet, rural pockets among pineapple fields and forest.
