About this home
Palaoa House sits 5 miles outside Nāʻālehu, with the Kaʻū coastline spread out below the lanai. It’s a simple, well-kept home: two queen bedrooms, one bath, a full kitchen, a washer and dryer, and a covered deck with lounge seating and a gas grill.
It’s set up for ordinary days, not just a few nights. The dining table doubles as a desk, and there are books and games for slow evenings. Out back, guava, mango and papaya trees mean that in the right season, part of breakfast comes off the tree.
Palaoa is Hawaiian for the sperm whale, and for the prized whale-tooth pendant, lei palaoa .

The area: Kaʻū
Kaʻū is Hawaiʻi Island’s largest and least crowded district: ranch land, macadamia orchards, coffee farms and a long, wild coastline. Life here is rural and quiet, and that’s the point.
Run errands in Nāʻālehu, and plan a day in Kona or Hilo for big shopping trips. The district’s hospital, Kaʻū Hospital in Pāhala, runs a 24-hour emergency room.
