Living in Windward Oʻahu

The Windward side sits beneath the dramatic, fluted cliffs of the Koʻolau mountains. Kailua is a beach town with shops, cafés, and some of the island’s most famous sand, while Kāneʻohe is a larger, more residential town on the bay.

It’s a popular choice for people who work in Honolulu but want a quieter, greener home base, with a 30 to 45 minute commute through the mountain tunnels.

Highlights

  • Kailua Beach Park and nearby Lanikai
  • Byodo-In Temple in the Valley of the Temples
  • Kualoa Ranch and the Kaʻaʻawa valley
  • Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse Trail near Waimānalo

Good to Know

  • Expect more rain than in Honolulu, especially in winter.
  • Kailua and Lanikai beaches get crowded on weekends, and parking is very limited.
  • Marine Corps Base Hawaii is at Kāneʻohe Bay, so rentals near it are popular with military families.
