Living in North Shore
The North Shore is Oʻahu’s country side. Haleʻiwa’s historic town has surf shops, shave ice, and food trucks, and the coast beyond it is lined with beach homes, small farms, and some of the most famous surf breaks in the world.
Summer brings calm, clear water. Winter brings giant waves and the crowds that come to watch them. It’s about an hour from Honolulu, so most long-stay renters here aren’t commuting into town every day.
Highlights
- Haleʻiwa town
- Waimea Bay and Waimea Valley
- Banzai Pipeline and Sunset Beach in winter
- Green sea turtles along the coast. Keep your distance.
Good to Know
- Winter surf can be extremely dangerous. Only swim when lifeguards say it’s safe.
- Kamehameha Highway is the only road along the coast, so traffic backs up on weekends and big surf days.
- Groceries and services are limited. Bigger shopping is in Wahiawā or Mililani.
