Living in Windward Oʻahu
The Windward side sits beneath the dramatic, fluted cliffs of the Koʻolau mountains. Kailua is a beach town with shops, cafés, and some of the island’s most famous sand, while Kāneʻohe is a larger, more residential town on the bay.
It’s a popular choice for people who work in Honolulu but want a quieter, greener home base, with a 30 to 45 minute commute through the mountain tunnels.
Highlights
- Kailua Beach Park and nearby Lanikai
- Byodo-In Temple in the Valley of the Temples
- Kualoa Ranch and the Kaʻaʻawa valley
- Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse Trail near Waimānalo
Good to Know
- Expect more rain than in Honolulu, especially in winter.
- Kailua and Lanikai beaches get crowded on weekends, and parking is very limited.
- Marine Corps Base Hawaii is at Kāneʻohe Bay, so rentals near it are popular with military families.
