Living in Leeward & Central Oʻahu

West and Central Oʻahu are where much of the island’s growth has happened. Kapolei and ʻEwa have newer homes, shopping centers, and the Skyline rail line, while Mililani in Central Oʻahu is a master-planned town with parks and schools.

The area is home to some of the island’s largest military installations, including Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam and Schofield Barracks, which makes it a natural fit for military families between assignments. Further up the Waiʻanae Coast, life is more rural and local.

Highlights

  • Ko Olina’s protected swimming lagoons
  • Pearl Harbor National Memorial
  • Mākaha Beach and the Waiʻanae Coast
  • Kaʻena Point State Park, at the island’s western tip

Good to Know

  • The H-1 commute into Honolulu is notoriously heavy at rush hour. The Skyline rail line can help, depending on where you live and work.
  • The Leeward coast is hot and dry, so ask about air conditioning.
  • The Waiʻanae Coast has one main road in and out.
  • Ko Olina is a resort area, so prices there run higher.
