Living in Honolulu
Honolulu is the only true city in Hawaiʻi, and the easiest place to live without a car. High-rise condos in Kakaʻako, Ala Moana, and Waikīkī put groceries, restaurants, beaches, and bus lines within walking distance.
Further from the center, neighborhoods like Mānoa, Kaimukī, and Hawaiʻi Kai feel more residential, with houses, local shops, and easy access to hiking and the east side beaches.
Highlights
- Waikīkī Beach and Kapiʻolani Park
- Diamond Head (Lēʻahi) summit trail. Visitors need advance reservations.
- Ala Moana Beach Park and the Kakaʻako street murals
- Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, which also requires reservations
- Mānoa Falls trail and the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa
Good to Know
- Parking is scarce and often extra. Ask whether a stall comes with the rental.
- Many condo buildings have their own minimum rental rules. Confirm the building allows your stay length.
- Traffic on the H-1 is among the worst in the country at rush hour.
- Waikīkī is lively and convenient, but it can be noisy at night.
